Billing & Payments

Passing Prompts is a membership based writer’s community with three membership tiers: Freelancer, Author and Wordsmith. Each tier offers distinctive member benefits. Two membership levels, Author and Wordsmith, are paid, recurring subscriptions where the member is charged monthly.

Costs & Payment Methods

How much does Passing Prompts cost?

The monthly cost of your membership depends upon the tier you choose:

  • Freelancer – $0
  • Author – $5.99/mo
  • Wordsmith – $9.99/mo
What payment methods do you accept?

We accept credit and debit cards with the American Express, Discover, Mastercard or Visa logos.

How do I change my payment method?

You can change your payment method at any time by visiting your Account page and clicking the Subscriptions tab.

Then click the Update link for your subscription to update your credit or debit card details.

Managing Your Membership

Where can I view my membership details?

You can see your membership tier and monthly cost on your Account page (passingprompts.com/account).

How do I upgrade or cancel my subscription?

On your Account page, click Memberships and then Subscriptions.

Click on Change Plan to upgrade or downgrade your subscription.

Click on Cancel to cancel your current subscription.

What happens when I upgrade or downgrade my subscription?

If you upgrade or downgrade to the Author or Wordsmith tier, your subscription takes effect immediately upon payment, with all the benefits of your chosen tier. Your renewal date changes to the date of your upgrade or downgrade, and renewal will take place on that date going forward.

Because your subscription takes effect immediately, we do pro-rate the cost of the subscription based on the term left on your previous subscription.

For example, if you upgrade from Author to Wordsmith in the middle of your month, we’ll apply a percentage of the cost of your Author subscription to the first month of your new Wordsmith subscription.

Likewise, if you downgrade from Wordsmith to Author in the middle of the month, we’ll credit a percentage of the cost of your Wordsmith subscription to your new Author subscription.

What happens when I cancel my subscription?
Cancelling your Author or Wordsmith subscription does not cancel your Passing Prompts membership.

Instead, you remain at the Author or Wordsmith tier, with all the associated benefits, until your subscription’s expiration date (which you can view on your Account page under Membership–>Subscriptions).

When your subscription expires, instead of being charged for the next month, you are downgraded to the Freelancer tier. Freelancer tier memberships are lifetime memberships that never expire.

Freelancer still have access to many areas of the site, of course, but at no charge. You can then choose to upgrade to Author or Wordsmith again in the future if you desire.

If you decide you want to completely end your Passing Prompts membership and have your Freelancer profile deactivated, please contact Customer Support.

Can I view my payment history?

Yes. Visit your Account page and click Payments to view your entire payment history.

Trial Periods & Coupon Codes

How does the free trial month work?

We frequently offer discount codes for a free month of Author or Wordsmith membership. You must enter a valid discount code during signup to receive the free month of membership.

During your free trial month, you will enjoy the same membership benefits as paid members for your chosen tier.

If the trial is free, why do you require a payment method?
Having a payment method in our system ensures your membership will continue, uninterrupted, once your free trial ends.

Your payment method will not immediately be charged for your subscription if using a discount code for a free trial month. However, depending on your bank’s policies, the charge authorization may temporarily affect your available credit or balance.

What happens when the free trial month is over?

Your payment method will automatically be charged for your first month of paid membership on the day your free trial expires. You can view your next billing date on your Account page by clicking the Subscriptions tab.

You will continue to be charged automatically each month unless you downgrade or cancel your membership.

If you choose to cancel your membership before the end of your free trial, you will not lose the benefits of your membership tier until your free trial expires.

How can I waive the reading fee when submitting a story?

Author and Wordsmith members can waive the reading fee when submitting a story to our short story contest. Author memberships include two free story submissions per month, which expire at the end of each month. Wordsmith memberships include unlimited free story submissions.

To waive the reading fee, enter your exclusive coupon code when submitting a story. You can find your coupon code by visiting your Account page and clicking the Coupon tab.

Author codes will work for two submissions each month. Wordsmith codes will work for unlimited submissions. Your code is exclusive to your membership and will only work when you are logged into the Passing Prompts website.

When your membership renews, a new coupon code will be generated and displayed on your Coupon tab for your exclusive use.

Can I get a refund for my membership or reading fees?

You may upgrade, downgrade or cancel your membership at any time from your Account page. You will continue to have access to the site until your expiration date, however subscription and reading fees are non-refundable.
